It holds the prestigious status of a grande école. This means it is a highly selective institution. While it is famous for political science, the school has expanded into many social sciences. These include economics, law, and sociology. Sociology is the study of how people interact in groups. The university operates a main campus in Paris. It also has decentralized campuses in several other French cities. These include Dijon, Le Havre, Menton, Nancy, Poitiers, and Reims. Each of these regional campuses focuses on a specific geopolitical part of the world.

The university operates through a unique dual structure. It is made up of two separate legal entities. One is the Institut d'études politiques, or IEP de Paris. The other is the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques, known as the FNSP. The FNSP is a private foundation. It manages the buildings and the libraries. It also determines the budget for the school. The two entities work together very closely. By tradition, the director of the school also serves as the administrator of the FNSP. This arrangement allows the school to receive government subsidies. However, it also maintains a high level of autonomy. This means the government does not intervene in its daily rules as much as other universities.

The history of Sciences Po began in December 1871. A group of intellectuals and businessmen formed the École libre des sciences politiques, or ELSP. This group was led by Émile Boutmy.

The school was created during a time of great crisis in France. The country had recently lost the Franco-Prussian War. There was also political upheaval following the Paris Commune. The founders wanted to train a new French elite. They believed the previous education system was not enough for modern leadership. Boutmy introduced an innovative approach to teaching. He focused on contemporary history. Before this, political leaders usually studied only ancient humanities. This new method helped the school become a pioneer in political science.

During its early years, the school held immense influence over the French government. Between 1901 and 1935, the school was incredibly central to the state. About 92.5% of entrants to the Grands corps de l'État studied there. These were the most powerful administrative bodies in the French Civil Service. The school also had a role in the French colonial empires. In 1886, it started a colonial studies program. The goal was to train people for colonial administration. This program closed in 1893 when a state-sponsored school was created. However, graduates still found many positions in the administrations of French colonies.

After World War II, the school underwent a major transformation. During the war, some people accused the school of collaborating with the Nazi occupation. However, the school had also trained many members of the French Resistance. It also trained eight of the thirteen ministers in the Provisional Government. To save the institution, leaders like Roger Seydoux worked to reform it. They excluded staff members who were too involved with the previous regime. The school was eventually nationalized and became a public institution. This refoundation helped ensure the progress of social sciences both inside and outside of France.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the school changed again. Under the direction of Richard Descoings, the curriculum became much broader. He added more focus on law, economics, and sociology. He also introduced a multilingual curriculum. Students began studying in French and English, among other languages. Descoings also required undergraduate students to spend one year studying abroad. To make the school more diverse, he started the Equal Opportunity Program in 2001. This program helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds attend the university. As a result, the number of scholarship students grew significantly. Between 2001 and 2011, scholarship students rose from 6% to 27% of the student body. Today, about 30% of all students receive some form of scholarship.

Sciences Po continues to grow as an international institution. Since 2013, the university has focused on becoming a selective university of international standing. The leadership has created new graduate schools to specialize in different areas. These include the School of Public Affairs and the School of Management and Innovation. The school also maintains strong connections to the professional world. As of 2021, 80% of Sciences Po graduates are employed in the private sector. The university remains a member of several important groups, such as the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. It continues to shape how leaders understand the complex systems of our world.
