Albert Soboul was a famous historian who studied the past. He focused on the French Revolution and the time of Napoleon. This was a very important part of history. He was known as the top expert on this era in France. Many people around the world studied his work. He spent his life looking at how big changes happen in a country.

Soboul's life was not always easy. He was born in 1914 in a place called French Algeria. His father was a textile worker who died in World War I. Later, his mother also passed away. His aunt Marie helped raise him in Nîmes, France. She was a primary school teacher. This helped him enjoy learning and school.

He worked very hard to become a great scholar. He studied at many schools like the Lycée of Nîmes. He also went to the university of Montpellier. Later, he studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He wrote his first history book using a different name. He finished his big studies in 1938. He even served in the military for a short time.

During the war, Soboul did important work. He was part of the French Resistance. This was a group that fought against German occupation. Because of this, he lost his teaching job in 1942. After the war, he became a very famous professor. He taught at the Sorbonne in 1967. He wrote a massive 1,100-page book about a group called the sans-culottes.

Soboul had special ideas about how history works. He believed that different social classes struggle against each other. He thought the sans-culottes were a very important group. He also had a theory about the Reign of Terror. He said this happened to protect the Revolution from enemies. Other historians, like François Furet, have different ideas about this. Even with these debates, his books are still used today.
