Scenic route

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A scenic route is a special path for travelers. These paths can be roads or waterways. They travel through areas of natural or cultural beauty. Most of these routes pass by great viewpoints. A government group usually picks these routes. They might be a Department of Transportation. This official label helps people find beautiful places.

There are many ways these routes work. Some roads are built just for tourism. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one example. Other roads were once main roads for traffic. People call them scenic after most cars leave. These are called scenic highways in the United States. Some paths are multi-modal. This means you can use many ways to travel. You can use a bike, a boat, or even your feet.

In the United States, special rules exist for these roads. Some routes have special banners on them. These routes are usually longer than the main parent route. There is only one official scenic route left in the country. It is U.S. Route 40 Scenic in Maryland. National Parkways are also very special roads. They have a buffer of park land on both sides. These roads are built for driving through historic areas.
