Some use a tiny string to hold on. This string is called a byssal thread.

Many scallops can swim to escape danger. They use a way called jet propulsion. To do this, they clap their shells together fast. This pushes water out to move them. They have a big muscle to help. This is the adductor muscle. It helps them snap their shells shut.

Scallops have a very cool way of seeing. They have many small eyes around their edges.

These eyes can find up to 200 spots. They use tiny mirrors to see light. This helps them spot moving shadows. These shadows might be a predator like a starfish.

Scallops eat tiny bits of food in the water. They are filter feeders. They trap food in mucus. Then, they move the food to their mouth. People also enjoy eating the scallop meat.
