It sits between your mouth and your nose. This part keeps the two spaces separate. The palate has two main parts. The front part is the hard palate. It is made of bone. The back part is the soft palate. We also call this the velum. It is made of fleshy tissue.

The hard palate forms before a baby is born. A nerve helps the palate feel things. This is the maxillary nerve. This nerve is a branch of the trigeminal nerve. The palate helps you speak. It works with other mouth parts to make sounds. These include many different types of consonants. Some animals have this too. Crocodiles have a similar structure. In the past, early animals did not have this. It grew in animals called cynodonts. Mammals kept this feature. Some old reptiles still have teeth on their palate. We call these teeth palatal dentition. Most mammals lost those teeth long ago.
