It is a very important part of your body. This structure separates your mouth from your nose. It keeps the oral cavity and nasal cavity apart. The palate has two main parts. The front part is the hard palate. This part is made of bone. The back part is the soft palate. This is also called the velum.

It is made of fleshy tissue.

This part of the mouth works in many ways. It helps you make many different sounds. These sounds are called consonants. Some are called velar or palatal sounds. Others are called uvular or postalveolar. The palate works with other mouth parts to do this. A nerve also helps the palate feel things. This is the maxillary nerve. It is a branch of the trigeminal nerve.

The hard palate forms before a baby is born.

We can look at the history of this structure. Early animals called synapsids did not have it. They did not have a second palate. This feature grew in animals called cynodonts. Later, mammals kept this feature. Some old reptiles still have teeth on the roof of their mouths. This is called palatal dentition. These teeth are still seen in modern amphibians. Most mammals lost these teeth a long time ago.

Words for the palate have interesting roots. The names palate and palatum come from Latin. They come from the Old French word palat. These words all mean the roof of the mouth. The Latin word might come from the Etruscans. This same Latin word is also where we get the word palace.

This shows how words can change over time. Some people use the word palate to talk about taste. They might say someone has a discriminating palate. This refers to how they sense flavors.

Even the flavor of a drink can be called a palate. For example, a wine might have an oaky palate. This is a way to describe its taste. The palate is also found in other animals. Crocodilians have a structure like this. Most other four-legged animals do not have it. Their mouth and nose spaces are not truly separate.
