Look inside your mouth to find the uvula. This small part hangs from the back of your soft palate. It is shaped like a cone. The name comes from a Latin word meaning "little grape."

The uvula is made of connective tissue and some muscle fibers. It also has many glands inside it. These glands produce a thin saliva. This saliva helps to keep your throat well lubricated. Only humans have a uvula.

The uvula works in a very specific way during swallowing. Its muscles are controlled by the pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve. These muscles can shorten or broaden the uvula. This movement changes the shape of the soft palate. The palate then presses against the back wall of your throat. This action closes off the nasopharynx. This step is vital because it stops food and drink from entering your nasal cavity.

Sometimes, the uvula does not look the same in everyone. A bifid uvula is a type where the uvula is split or cleft. This happens when the palatine shelves do not fuse completely. This split uvula occurs in about 2% of people. However, the rate is 10% for Native Americans.

A split uvula has less muscle than a normal one. This can sometimes lead to middle ear infections. It is also a symptom of a rare condition called Loeys–Dietz syndrome.

Your uvula also helps you make sounds when you speak. It acts as an accessory speech organ. In many languages, people use the uvula to make consonant sounds. These are called uvular consonants. One example is the voiced uvular trill. This sound is used in languages like French, Arabic, and Hebrew.

The uvula can also trigger your gag reflex if it is stimulated. This can be a problem for people with uvula piercings.

Sometimes the uvula can become very swollen. This condition is called uvulitis. It can grow to be 3 to 5 times its normal size. This might happen from snoring, allergies, or a viral infection.

A long uvula can also cause vibrations that lead to snoring. In some cases, doctors perform an operation called a UPPP. This surgery removes part of the uvula to help with sleep apnea. This treatment has shown between 40% and 60% effectiveness in some research.
