You might see a small part hanging down. This is the uvula. Its name comes from a Latin word for "little grape."

The uvula is made of muscle and tissue. It has glands that make thin saliva. This helps keep your throat wet and smooth.

The uvula helps you in many ways. When you swallow, it moves up. It works with the soft palate to close the path to your nose. This stops food and drink from going up your nose. The uvula also helps you speak. It helps make certain sounds in languages like French or Arabic.

Sometimes, the uvula can get very big and puffy. This is called uvulitis. It can swell up to five times its normal size. This might happen if you are sick or thirsty. A swollen uvula can make it hard to eat or breathe.
