Sandhi

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Words can change sounds when we talk. This is called sandhi. Sounds can blend together to make speech smooth.

Sometimes a sound changes because of the next sound. In English, we might say "ten books" as "tem books." This makes it easier to say.

Some languages change the pitch of a word. This is called tone sandhi. In Chinese, one tone can change into another.

In French, a silent letter might wake up. It makes a sound if the next word starts with a vowel. This helps the words flow.

Sandhi happens in many lands and ways. It is a part of how people speak every day.
