Epenthesis

Sometimes we add a sound to a word. This is called epenthesis.

We might add a sound in the middle. This can help us say a word. It can be a vowel or a consonant.

Some people say "hamster" with a "p" sound. They say "hampster." This helps bridge two sounds together.

We can also add sounds at the start. We can add them at the end, too. This makes words fit a language better.

Extra sounds can change how words sound. They help us speak more clearly.
