Metathesis (linguistics)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes sounds swap places in a word. This is called metathesis. It can happen with two sounds next to each other. It can even happen with sounds far apart.

Many ways to talk use this. Some people use it on purpose. In French, people use a style called verlan. They flip the parts of a word. This makes a new, fun word.

In sign language, people can swap hand moves. They might change where they touch their body. This happens when signs are close together.

Children do this too. A child might say "pasketti" for spaghetti. This happens because the sounds swap.

English words have changed this way for a long time. The word "bird" used to be different. Now, sounds have moved to make it sound right. It is a neat way words change.
