Metathesis (linguistics)

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes sounds in a word swap places. This is called metathesis. It can happen with sounds that are close together. It can even happen with sounds that are far apart.

Metathesis has changed many English words over a long time. The word "bird" used to look different. The word "horse" also changed from its old form. Even the word "three" used to be written as "thrid." This swap can happen when people speak. A child might say "pasketti" instead of "spaghetti." This is a common way sounds move.

Some people use metathesis on purpose. In French, people use a style called verlan. They flip the parts of a word to make new ones. This is often used in informal speech. In American Sign Language, signers might swap moves. They may change where they touch their body. This happens when signs are near each other. Both ways of signing are okay to use. Many languages like Hebrew and Arabic also use these sound swaps. It is a natural part of how many people talk.
