Sandhi

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how words change when we speak? This is called sandhi. It happens when sounds change at the edges of words. This can make speech feel smooth and easy.

There are two main kinds of sandhi. Internal sandhi happens inside a single word. External sandhi happens between two separate words. In English, some people say "tem books" instead of "ten books." This makes the sounds blend together.

In French, a silent letter can wake up. This is called liaison. A letter that is usually quiet might make a sound if the next word starts with a vowel. In Chinese, sandhi can change the tone of a word. Tone is the high or low pitch of a sound. In Mandarin Chinese, one tone might change into another based on the next word.

Many languages use sandhi. It is used in Indian languages like Tamil and Sanskrit. It also happens in Japanese and Portuguese. In Japanese, sounds can change when words join together. In Tamil, people add small sounds to smooth the gap between vowels. Sandhi is a natural part of how many people talk every day.
