In language, this is called reduplication. It is a way to make new words. It can also change the meaning of a word. People use it in many different languages around the world.

Sometimes, a person repeats the whole word. This is called full reduplication. For example, the word for house in Malay is rumah. To say houses, you say rumah-rumah. Other times, you only repeat part of a word. This is called partial reduplication. In Marshallese, the word for belt is kagir. To say wear a belt, you say kagirgir.

Reduplication can show many things. It can show there is more than one of something. It can show an action keeps happening. In the Nama language, the word go means look. But go-go means to examine with great care. In Finnish, repeating a word can show it is very real. For example, food-food means proper food, not just snacks.
