Have you ever noticed how repeating a word can change its whole meaning?

In the study of language, this is called reduplication. It is a way to create new words or change how a word works. A person takes a base word and copies part of it or the whole thing. This copy is called a reduplicant. Sometimes, the copy is exactly the same as the original. Other times, the copy might have a slight change. This simple trick helps people express many different ideas through speech.

There are different ways that reduplication works in a language. Full reduplication happens when you repeat the entire word. For example, in the language Kham, people use this to change how words relate to each other. Partial reduplication is different because you only repeat a small piece of the word. In Marshallese, you can take the word kagir, which means belt, and add a piece to make kagirgir. This new word means to wear a belt. Some languages even use triplication, which means they repeat the word two times instead of just once.

Reduplication is a very old way of using language. We can find examples of it in Sumerian, which is an ancient language. In Sumerian, people used reduplication to form words for colors like white and black. It has also been part of many language families for a long time. In the Indo-European language family, older versions of languages used it to change verb forms. For example, in Latin, the word spondeo means "I vow." By repeating parts of the word, it became spopondi, which means "I vowed." This shows how the pattern has traveled through history.

Different languages use these repeated sounds for many specific reasons. In Malay, repeating the word rumah, which means house, creates rumah-rumah to mean houses. This is a way to show there is more than one of something. In the Nama language, repeating the word go can change "look" into "examine with attention."

In Chinese and Japanese, it can create a sense of a group. For instance, the Japanese word toki means time, but tokidoki means sometimes. These examples show that repeating sounds is a tool for adding detail and precision.

Reduplication also helps people show how they feel about a word. In Finnish, people use it to show that something is real or complete. If someone says "food-food," they mean proper, real food instead of just snacks. They might also say "sick-sick" to show they are truly ill. This is called contrastive focus reduplication because it helps focus on the most important meaning. It is a way to make speech more expressive and colorful. By using these patterns, speakers can share much more than just simple facts.
