Inflection

Words can change their shape to share new facts. This is called inflection. We use inflection to show things like time or number.

We often change words by adding small bits to the ends. These bits are called affixes. For example, we add -s to the word dog to make dogs. This tells us there is more than one. We also add -ed to words like wait to make waited. This shows the action happened in the past.

Some words change in different ways. They might change their middle sounds instead of adding an ending. The word foot changes to feet. The word mouse changes to mice. These are called irregular words because they do not follow the usual pattern.

There are special names for these changes. When we change a verb, we call it conjugation. When we change a noun, we call it declension. Some words never change at all. These are called invariant words. Using these changes helps us speak clearly. It helps us show how words fit together in a sentence.
