Lenition

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sounds can change when we talk. This is called lenition. It means a sound becomes soft or weak.

Sometimes sounds change because of other sounds. In English, the 't' in 'wait' sounds like a quick tap. This happens when we say 'waiting.'

Other times, sounds change over a long time. This can change a whole language. In some lands, a sound might even go away.

In Welsh, the start of a word can change. The word for 'cat' changes after certain words. This is a rule for how to talk.

It is fun to hear these shifts. Can you find soft sounds in your speech?
