language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sounds can change when we talk. One sound can look like another. This happens when we speak fast. It helps our words flow.

Sometimes a sound changes to match its neighbor. In the word handbag, the sounds change. They become more alike. This makes the word easier to say.

Some sounds change because of the sound that follows. This is called anticipatory change. Other sounds change because of the sound before them. This is called lag change.

Two sounds can also join together. They fuse into one new sound. This is called coalescence. It can happen in many ways.

People use these changes every day. They help us speak smoothly. Can you hear sounds changing?
