Words can change their sounds. This happens when we join parts together. For example, we add an "s" to make words plural. We say "cats" with one sound. But we say "dogs" with a different sound. The sound changes based on the word. Sometimes, a word changes even more. The word "leaf" turns into "leaves." This is how sounds work in a language. It helps us build new words correctly.
