Rwanda-Rundi

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Rwanda-Rundi is a group of related languages. They are spoken in Central Africa. People use these languages in many different lands. They speak them in Rwanda and Burundi. They also speak them in Congo, Uganda, and Tanzania. One language called Ha has one million speakers.

Two main languages are Kinyarwanda and Kirundi. Kinyarwanda is the national language of Rwanda. Kirundi is the national language of Burundi. These two sound very much alike. People can often understand each other when they speak. However, other dialects may be harder to understand.

These languages use tones. A tone is a high or low sound. The tone can change what a word means. For example, a long vowel can have a rising tone. This happens when it moves from low to high. It can also have a falling tone.

Words can also be short or long. This changes the meaning too. In Kinyarwanda, the word inka means cow. In Kirundi, the word for dislike is anka. These small changes in sound are important for speaking well.
