language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sukuma is a way of speaking. It is used in Tanzania. People speak it near Lake Victoria.

They live in areas like Mwanza and Shinyanga.

There are different ways to speak Sukuma. These are called dialects. People in the west speak one way. People in the east speak another. Most of them can still understand each other. Some people think Sukuma is like Nyamwezi. But the speakers say they are different.

Sukuma uses the Roman script to write. This is a set of letters. It looks like the letters used for Swahili.

People use these letters for religious books. They also use them for Bible translations.

Words in Sukuma change in many ways. Nouns belong to different classes. This helps people know what is being talked about. Some classes are for people. Other classes are for trees or animals. Some classes are for body parts or food. Even words for "inside" or "on" a cupboard have their own way. Verbs also change. They can show if something is happening to someone else. They can also show when things happen in time.
