Kinyarwanda

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kinyarwanda is a special way of speaking. It is the national language of Rwanda. Many people in Rwanda use it every day. People also speak it in Uganda and the Congo. It is part of the Rwanda-Rundi language group. This means it sounds like Kirundi. Kirundi is the national language of Burundi. People from both places can understand each other.

Kinyarwanda has a unique sound. It is a tonal language. This means the pitch of your voice matters. A high sound or a low sound can change a word. The language also uses many noun classes. These are groups of words that use special prefixes. For example, the word for person is 'umuntu'. The word for people is 'abantu'.

A group called the Rwanda Academy of Language and Culture helps the language. They work to keep Kinyarwanda strong. In 2014, they tried to change how the words are written. Some people did not like this new way. They wanted to keep things as they were. This shows how much people care about their language.
