It is an exonym, which means it is a name used by people from outside a region. In the Middle Ages, writers used this term for lands where East Slavic people lived. These areas covered much of what we now call Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Russia.

The name was often linked to the people of the Kievan Rus' state. This state was very important for organizing the tribes in the region. Some people also used the name to talk about the Slavic people on the island of Rügen.

To understand how this name worked, we can look at how it changed over time. In the early Middle Ages, the name referred to the lands under Kievan rule. This area included places like Kiev, Chernigov, and Pereyaslav.

As the power of Kiev faded, the meaning of the name shifted. Later, the term became more closely tied to lands in the Polish Crown. It was also used for the Cossack Hetmanate. Even the Polish Kingdom used the title "King of Ruthenia" after it took over Galicia.

History shows that many different groups fought for control of these lands. In the 13th century, a massive Mongolian occupation changed the region. After this, western parts of the land joined the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. By the 15th century, the Moscow principality also began to fight for these territories. In 1547, the Moscow principality took the title of the Tsardom of the Whole Rus. This was a time of great change for the people living there. Different groups used different names, like the Latin "Ruthenia" or the Greek "Rossiya."

There are many specific facts about the geography and culture of these lands. A writer named Johann Boemus described a country that stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Caspian Sea. He said it went from the Don River to the northern ocean.

This land was famous for its forests filled with animals that had valuable fur. It was also a source of much beeswax. In 1844, a scientist named Karl Ernst Claus found a new element called ruthenium. He named it after Ruthenia to honor Russia. This element was found in platinum ore in the Ural Mountains.

Today, the name Ruthenia helps us see how modern nations are connected to the past. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the name "Ukrainian" became much more popular. This caused the old name to be used only in smaller areas.

For example, some people in the Carpathian Mountains still call themselves Rusyn. They live in an area known as Carpathian Ruthenia. These people have different views on their identity. Some see themselves as part of the Ukrainian nation. Others believe they are a separate group with their own language and culture.
