In the past, the land was very big. One writer said it reached from the Baltic Sea to the Caspian Sea.

Many different groups lived there. Most were East Slavic people. They were often called Ruthenians. Some people in the Carpathian Mountains still use the name Rusyn today.

In the Middle Ages, the land had many resources. The forests had animals with valuable fur. The land also provided much beeswax.

Over many years, the borders changed. Some parts became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Other parts were under the rule of the Moscow principality. Today, the name helps us understand the deep history of Eastern Europe.
