When the pulp is infected, it can cause an abscess. An abscess is a pocket of infection. A dentist can use a root canal to save the tooth.

First, the dentist must find the problem. They may use an x-ray to look inside.

They might also tap the tooth to check for pain. Next, the dentist makes a small opening in the tooth. They use a rubber dam to keep the area clean. This prevents saliva from getting into the tooth.

Then, the dentist cleans the hollow spaces. They use small tools called files to shape the canals. They also use liquids to kill germs.

After cleaning, the dentist fills the space. They use a material called gutta-percha. This is a natural material from a tree. It helps seal the tooth so germs cannot get back in. Finally, a crown may be placed on top to keep it strong.
