Root canal

Every tooth has a hollow space inside. This space is called a root canal.

Inside this space is a soft tissue called dental pulp. The pulp holds blood vessels and nerves. The blood vessels give food to the tooth. The nerves send signals to your brain. This helps you feel hot or cold. The pulp also helps make adult teeth. It keeps the tooth strong so it does not break.

The pulp lives in a chamber at the top. From there, it travels through paths in the roots. These paths are the root canals. They can be round or oval. Some are shaped like a tear.

Some teeth have one canal. Other teeth have four or more. There are also tiny side paths. We call these accessory canals. They can be anywhere along the root.

Sometimes the pulp gets damaged. A dentist can clean the space out. They clean and fill the area to stop pain. If a tiny side path is missed, the tooth may stay sick. New scans help doctors find these small paths.
