Every tooth has a hidden space inside it. This space is called a root canal.

It is a hollow area that lives deep within the tooth. The space starts in a wide area called the pulp chamber. This chamber sits in the top part of the tooth. From there, the space travels down through the roots. These paths are the main root canals. They look a bit like the graphite inside a pencil.

Inside these canals is a soft tissue called dental pulp. This pulp is very important for your teeth.

The dental pulp does many jobs to keep teeth healthy. It contains blood vessels that provide food and water. This helps the tooth stay strong and less brittle. This makes it harder for the tooth to break when you eat. The pulp also has sensory nerves. These nerves send signals to your brain. This is how you feel things that are hot or cold. The pulp even helps finish making adult teeth. This happens one to two years after the teeth grow into your mouth.

Learning about these spaces has taken a long time. A man named Walter Hess studied thousands of teeth. He used a replica technique to see the inside clearly. In 1917, he showed that these spaces are very complex. He found that canals are not just simple, smooth tubes. They often have many side parts like fins or small branches. These extra parts are called accessory canals. They can be found near the root end or anywhere else.

Teeth can have many different shapes inside. Most root canals have an oval shape. This happens in 50 to 70 percent of cases. Some canals look like a tear shape instead. The number of canals depends on how many roots a tooth has. Some teeth have one root, while others have four or five. Some teeth even have more than five roots. Upper molars often have hidden side canals. These small paths can be hard to see on old X-rays.

New CT scans help doctors find them better.

Sometimes the pulp gets hurt or stays sick. This is when a dentist performs root canal treatment. They clean out the damaged pulp to stop the pain. They must clean the whole space very carefully. If a tiny side path is missed, the tooth might stay infected. This can cause the treatment to fail. Dentists use a special liquid called sodium hypochlorite to clean the area. They also use metal files to help clear the paths. This helps keep the tooth healthy for a long time.
