It is the most common type of pain people feel in their mouth or face. Most of these pains come from dental issues, but sometimes they come from other parts of the body. For example, a sinus problem can cause pain in your upper back teeth. Even heart issues like angina pectoris can cause pain in your lower teeth.

Because it can be so uncomfortable, toothaches are a very common reason for emergency dental visits.

Many toothaches happen because of pulpitis, which is inflammation of the soft part inside your tooth.

This can happen because of tooth decay, a crack, or an imperfect filling. The pulp is trapped inside a hard, rigid shell. When it swells, there is no room for it to grow. This creates pressure that can squeeze the blood vessels inside. This lack of oxygen can lead to pulp necrosis, which means the tissue dies.

If the pain is mild and goes away quickly, it might be reversible. If the pain is severe and lasts a long time, it is irreversible.

Sometimes, a toothache is caused by an abscess.

An abscess is a small collection of pus. There are different kinds of abscesses that can form. An apical abscess happens near the tip of the tooth root. A periodontal abscess forms in the gums, often due to gum disease. These types of infections often cause a deep, throbbing pain.

Dentists can treat these by draining the pus or using other medical actions.

Other problems can also cause discomfort in your mouth. Dentin hypersensitivity is a sharp pain that affects about 15% of people.

It is often triggered by cold air, sweet foods, or spicy drinks. This happens when gums recede and expose the roots of the teeth. Another issue is food impaction, where food gets stuck between teeth. This can happen if there is a gap between teeth or a poorly shaped filling. This trapped food can make the gums swell, feel tender, and bleed.

Understanding how to prevent toothaches is very important for your health. Good oral hygiene helps prevent the diseases that lead to pain.

If a toothache does happen, a dentist can help find the exact cause. They might use a filling, a root canal, or even remove the tooth. Historically, the need to treat toothaches is thought to have helped dental surgery become a special part of medicine. In 2013 alone, there were 223 million cases of toothache from decay in permanent teeth. There were also 53 million cases in baby teeth.
