Wisdom teeth are the very last teeth to grow in your mouth.

Most people get them between the ages of 14 and 25. Sometimes, these teeth get stuck before they can grow in fully. This condition is called being impacted.

It happens when there is not enough room in the jaw. Other teeth can also act as a physical barrier. This prevents the tooth from reaching its proper place. Because they are the last to arrive, they often run out of space.

When a tooth is stuck, several things can happen. If the tooth is completely covered by bone or gum, it might not cause any pain. This is called being asymptomatic, which means a person feels no symptoms.

However, a tooth can still have problems even if it does not hurt. If part of the tooth pokes through the gum, bacteria can get trapped. This can lead to pericoronitis, which is inflammation around the crown of the tooth.

This can cause swelling, pain, or bleeding in the gums.

Doctors have studied wisdom teeth for a very long time. Famous thinkers like Plato and Hippocrates wrote about them in ancient texts. Later, Charles Darwin also described them in his work.

It was not until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that managing these teeth became easier. This was possible because of new tools like X-rays and anesthesia. These tools helped doctors see the teeth and perform surgery more safely. Now, dentists can use special images to plan how to help.

There are many ways to classify how a tooth is stuck. Dentists look at the direction the tooth is tilting. For example, a mesioangular impaction means the tooth tilts forward.

They also look at how deep the tooth is in the jaw. In U.S. dental schools, many learn the Pell and Gregory Classification. This system looks at the horizontal and vertical position of the tooth.

These details help doctors understand the risks of surgery.

Deciding when to remove a tooth is a big topic for doctors. Some suggest removing them while a person is a teenager. This is because the roots are not fully grown yet. This can make the surgery easier and lead to fewer complications.

Other health groups say you should only remove them if they cause problems. This avoids the cost and risk of unnecessary surgery. It is a balance between preventing future trouble and avoiding extra work.
