A mouth ulcer is a small sore on the mucous membrane. This membrane is the soft lining inside your mouth.

You might know them as canker sores or salt blisters. These sores can appear one at a time. Sometimes, a whole group of ulcers shows up at once.

Most ulcers are not caused by something serious. However, a sore that does not heal might be a sign of oral cancer.

It is important to watch how they look and feel.

An ulcer is a deep break in the mouth's lining. It is different from an erosion, which is a very shallow scratch.

When an ulcer forms, the surface tissue is lost. This creates a crater-like shape in the mouth. The base of the ulcer often looks yellow or grey. This color comes from a layer called a fibrinous exudate. You might also see a red ring around the sore. This ring is called a halo and is caused by inflammation.

Swelling can also happen in the area nearby.

Many different things can cause these painful sores to start. Local trauma is a very common cause for most people. This means physical harm like accidentally biting your cheek. Sharp edges from a broken filling or braces can also rub the skin. Even eating hard foods like potato chips can cause damage.

Heat can also cause a burn. This happens if you eat food that is too hot. Sometimes, strong chemicals can damage the lining too. Some people get ulcers for reasons that doctors do not yet know. This condition is called aphthous stomatitis.

There are many specific facts about how these sores act. A person might avoid salty or spicy foods while healing. This is because those foods can cause a lot of discomfort. Doctors look at many details to find the cause. They check the size, color, and if the sore is hard. They also check how long the lesion has been there. If a sore lasts longer than two or three weeks, you should see a professional. A dentist or a surgeon can check to rule out cancer. They might even use a biopsy to look at a tiny sample.

Understanding mouth ulcers helps you know your own body. Most of the time, they are just a temporary nuisance. They are much like a scrape on your knee. Your body works to fix the broken tissue. If you have ulcers that keep coming back, it might be a sign of something else. For example, it could be related to how your immune system works. It could also be linked to vitamin levels in your blood. Knowing these signs helps you stay healthy and comfortable.
