Sometimes a tooth gets a hole. This can happen from decay or injury.

A dentist must fix the tooth to make it strong again. First, they must prepare the tooth. They use tools like a laser or a tiny drill. This removes any decay. They also remove weak parts of the tooth. This helps the new part stay in place.

There are two main ways to fix a tooth. The first way is called a direct restoration. The dentist puts a soft material right into the hole. This material sets and becomes hard. This can happen in just one visit. They might use amalgam, which is a silver metal. They may also use composite, which is tooth-colored.

The second way is called an indirect restoration. These are made outside of the mouth. A lab makes the part to fit your tooth. Common types are crowns or inlays.

The dentist then sticks it on with cement. This often takes two visits. Some parts are made from ceramic or gold. These are very strong and last a long time.
