When a tooth is damaged, it needs help to stay strong. This damage can come from decay, which is a type of rot, or from an injury.

Dentists use something called dental restorations to fix these problems. These treatments help a tooth keep its shape and work properly again. They can also seal a tooth after a big procedure like a root canal. Restorations are very important for keeping our mouths healthy and happy.

To fix a tooth, a dentist must first prepare it. They use special tools like a tiny drill or a laser to clean the tooth. This step removes the decay and any weak parts of the tooth. If the outer enamel is not supported, it might break easily.

The dentist must make sure the tooth is ready to hold the new material. Sometimes they even use a temporary filling if the permanent one cannot be put in right away.

There are two main ways to place a restoration. The first way is a direct restoration. The dentist puts a soft material directly into the prepared tooth. This material then sets and becomes hard in just one visit.

They might use amalgam, which is a silver metal, or a tooth-colored composite. They may even use a small metal shape called a matrix to help the material keep the right shape.

Another way is an indirect restoration. These are made outside of the mouth, often in a laboratory. A technician uses a model of your tooth to build things like inlays, onlays, or crowns.

Once the piece is ready, the dentist cements it into place. This usually takes two separate visits to the dentist. Some people use these for things like bridges or even porcelain veneers.

People have been fixing teeth for a very long time. Evidence from Italy shows that people used bitumen 13,000 years ago to fill teeth. In Slovenia, people used beeswax to fix tooth fractures 6,500 years ago.

Even in old Roman times, writers mentioned materials used for hollow teeth. Today, we use advanced tools like computers to design perfect dental pieces. This helps ensure every restoration fits just right.
