A dentist can save a sick tooth.

Sometimes a tooth gets very sick.

Sometimes a tooth becomes very sick. This happens when germs get inside the pulp. The pulp is the soft part inside your tooth. It holds nerves and blood vessels.
First, the dentist must find the problem. They may use an x-ray to look inside.
Then, the dentist cleans the hollow spaces. They use small tools called files to shape the canals. They also use liquids to kill germs.
A root canal is a special way to save a tooth. Inside every tooth, there are tiny hollow spaces called pulp chambers and root canals. These spaces hold soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Sometimes, germs get inside and cause an infection or an abscess. An abscess is a painful pocket of infection. If a cavity is too big for a normal filling, a dentist might use endodontic therapy. This treatment removes the sick pulp to stop the infection. It also protects the tooth from more germs in the future.
To start, the dentist must find the exact problem. They use many tests to check the tooth and the area around it. They might use an x-ray to see inside the tooth.
Next comes the cleaning part of the work. The dentist uses small, needle-shaped tools called files to clean out the soft tissue. These files can be moved by hand or by a small engine. The dentist also uses liquids called irrigants to kill germs and dissolve tissue. One common liquid used is sodium hypochlorite. After the canals are clean, the dentist must fill the empty spaces. They use a natural material called gutta-percha, which comes from the latex of the percha tree. This material is often used with a special cement to create a tight seal.
Doctors have used many different ways to clean these canals over time. In 1961, a man named Ingle developed a standardized technique. Later, many other methods were created to make the work more precise. Some methods, like the step-back technique, shape the canal in stages. Other newer ways use engine-driven tools to work more quickly. Since the year 2000, lidocaine has been a common medicine used to help with pain. This helps the patient stay comfortable while the dentist works.
Understanding a root canal helps you see how dentists protect your smile. It is a lot like fixing a pipe in a house. If a pipe gets clogged or dirty, you must clean it out and seal it up. The dentist cleans the inside of the tooth so it can stay strong. After the canals are filled with gutta-percha, a crown is often placed on top. A crown is a cap that covers the tooth and protects it from breaking. This way, the tooth can keep working just like a healthy one.
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a specialized dental procedure. It is designed to treat the infected pulp inside a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue found in the pulp chamber and root canals. This tissue contains nerves, blood vessels, and other cellular entities. When bacteria invade, they can cause an abscess, which is a pocket of infection. Endodontic therapy aims to eliminate this infection and protect the tooth from future microbial invasion.
Before the procedure begins, a dentist must perform a careful diagnosis. They examine the dental pulp and the surrounding periapical tissues. This ensures the most appropriate treatment is chosen to preserve the tooth. Dentists use several diagnostic tests to understand the issue. Palpation involves feeling the tip of the root for swelling or tenderness. Percussion is when the dentist taps the tooth to check for sensitivity. Transillumination uses a light to look for fractures within the tooth. They may also use a Tooth Slooth, which is a plastic instrument for biting.
Once the diagnosis is complete, the dentist begins the mechanical preparation. First, they make an opening through the enamel and dentin. This is usually done with a dental drill and a burr. To keep the area clean, the dentist uses a rubber dam. This device isolates the tooth from saliva and oral contamination. Using a rubber dam is mandatory to prevent new microorganisms from entering the canals. It also protects the patient from accidentally inhaling or swallowing dental instruments.
Cleaning the root canals requires removing the infected or inflamed tissue. Dentists use small, needle-shaped files to do this work. These can be manual hand files or engine-driven rotary files. During this process, the dentist uses chemical irrigants to kill microbes. Sodium hypochlorite is a common irrigant used for this purpose. Other liquids include chlorhexidine gluconate and EDTA. These chemicals help dissolve pulpal tissue and clear out the narrow spaces.
There are many different techniques for shaping the canals. In 1961, a standardized technique was developed by Ingle. Since then, many refinements have emerged to improve precision. The step-back technique shapes the canal in different phases. The crown-down procedure prepares the canal starting from the top part. Some dentists use the double flare method introduced by Fava. In the 1990s, engine-driven instrumentation became more common. These systems include tools like ProTaper and Light Speed files.
After the canals are clean and decontaminated, they must be filled. This process is called obturation. The standard filling material is gutta-percha. This is a natural polymer made from the latex of the percha tree. The dentist places gutta-percha cones into the canals along with a sealing cement. Some procedures use epoxy resin to bind the material. Because gutta-percha is radiopaque, dentists can see it clearly on an x-ray. This allows them to verify that there are no empty spaces in the filling.
Successful endodontic therapy is vital for dental health. It allows a patient to keep their natural tooth rather than having it extracted. While the procedure can be complex, it preserves the function of the mouth. Modern medicine also helps manage the process. Since the year 2000, lidocaine has been the most common local anesthetic used. This helps keep the patient comfortable during the treatment. By cleaning and sealing the tooth, dentists prevent future decay from reaching the center of the tooth.
