Role model

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A role model is a person we look to for guidance. We watch their behavior, examples, or success to learn how to act. These people serve as a pattern for others to follow. This is especially true for younger people who are still growing.

Many people find role models in their daily lives. They might look at parents or teachers to learn important life skills. A role model can help a person build confidence and do well in school. They can even help teenagers make safer choices by setting a good example.

How we choose role models is a very interesting thing. We often pick people who seem similar to us. We look for someone who has a goal that feels both big and possible.

For example, historian Pamela Laird noted that Benjamin Franklin was a model for many businessmen in the 1800s. These men saw him as a guide for their own careers. However, a lack of similar models made things harder for women and minorities. This led to more work in the late 1900s to find suitable models for everyone.

History shows us that even whole countries can have role models. In the 1800s, many people in Chile looked to France as a model. Later in that century, they shifted their focus toward Germany.

Today, we see many role models in the media and entertainment. A 2008 survey in the United Kingdom found that kids often pick sports stars. Pop stars are also very common choices for young people. Some people even hope to be famous just for the sake of being famous.

There is a big debate about whether athletes should be role models. Some people think athletes show great discipline and control on the field. Others, like Charles Barkley, believe athletes are not the best people for children to follow. Barkley thinks it is the responsibility of parents to be the main models.

Some athletes, like Hank Greenberg, have tried to set a good example for their towns. This discussion shows that being a role model is a very big job. It is not just about being good at a sport or a job.

Role models are very important for helping girls reach their goals. Seeing women in science can help girls feel like they truly belong in those fields.

Even movie characters like Mulan or Elsa can change how girls see themselves. Mulan shows that it is okay to be brave and not follow old rules. However, researchers say that seeing a role model once is often not enough. To make a real change, children need ongoing support and mentorship. This helps them turn what they learn into lasting success in their lives.
