Role model

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A role model is a person we look to for ideas. We might copy how they act or how they succeed. This term was first used by a man named Robert K. Merton. He said people often compare themselves to others. This helps them decide who they want to be.

Many people find role models in the media. A study in the United Kingdom found that kids often choose sports stars. Pop stars are also very popular. Some people even want to be famous just to be famous. Some people argue about athletes being role models. Charles Barkley said athletes are not the best people for kids to follow. He thinks parents should be the main role models.

Role models can change how we see our future. For girls, seeing women in science can be very helpful. It helps them feel like they belong in those jobs. Even characters in movies can be role models. Characters like Mulan show that it is okay to be brave and different. Role models can help kids feel more confident and do well in school.
