Roland TR-808

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Roland TR-808 is a famous drum machine. It was made by the Roland Corporation. It came out in 1980.

Most drum machines back then used recorded sounds. The 808 was different. It used analog synthesis. This means it makes sounds using electricity. It does not play back samples of real drums. Because of this, the sounds can seem robotic or spacey. The 808 can make many sounds. It has a bass drum, snare, and cowbell. It also makes sounds like handclaps and maracas.

The bass drum is its most famous part. It makes a deep, booming sound. Musicians can change how long the sound lasts. This is called decay.

At first, the 808 was not a big success. Many people wanted more realistic drum sounds. Roland stopped making it in 1983. They could not find the right parts to build more. But underground musicians loved its unique sound. It became a key part of hip-hop and electronic music. It helped make hits by Marvin Gaye and Afrika Bambaataa. Today, many songs still use its sounds.
