He changed how we make music. As a boy, he loved electronics. At age 14, he built a theremin. A theremin is an instrument played without touching it. You move your hands near radio antennae to make sound.

Later, Moog wanted to make better tools for musicians. He built the first commercial synthesizer. A synthesizer is a machine that makes electronic sounds. Before his work, these machines were huge. They could fill an entire room! Moog made his machines smaller and cheaper.

He used a voltage-controlled oscillator. This is a part that uses electricity to change pitch. This means the note goes higher or lower. He also made a portable model called the Minimoog. It was very famous.

Moog was a great engineer but a poor businessman. He did not patent many of his ideas. This helped the whole music industry grow. Today, his work is in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. You can see his tools at the Moogseum.
