Roland TR-808

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Roland TR-808 is a very famous drum machine. It was made by the Roland Corporation between 1980 and 1983. Most drum machines back then used recorded sounds called samples. The 808 was different because it used analog synthesis. This means it creates sounds using electricity and circuits.

This way of making sound was unique. It gave the machine a special, futuristic feeling. Some people even said it sounded like a toy or a robot.

How does the 808 make its sounds? Instead of playing a recording, it uses a drum synthesizer. This system builds sounds from scratch using electronic parts. For example, the famous bass drum uses a sine oscillator. It also uses a low-pass filter and a voltage-controlled amplifier.

Users can change the decay, which is how long a sound lasts. This lets them make the bass drum boom for a long time. The machine can also imitate many other things. It makes sounds like snares, cowbells, handclaps, and even maracas.

There is a long history behind this machine. In 1969, a musician named Don Lewis modified an Ace Tone machine. He worked with Ikutaro Kakehashi, the founder of Ace Tone. Kakehashi later started the Roland Corporation in 1972. He hired Lewis to help design new drum machines. Later, a team led by chief engineer Tadao Kikumoto built the 808. Other engineers like Hiro Nakamura and Hisanori Matsuoka also helped.

They wanted to make an affordable machine for professionals.

At first, the 808 was not a big success. It cost $495 when it launched in 1980. Many producers wanted drums that sounded like real people playing. Because of this, Roland only sold about 12,000 units. They stopped making it in 1983. They could not find the specific faulty transistors needed to build them.

However, the machine became very cheap on the used market. It often sold for less than $100. This helped underground musicians buy it easily.

Even though it failed at first, the 808 changed music forever. It became a cornerstone for hip-hop and electronic dance music. Many hit songs used it, like "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye. It also helped shape the sound of groups like Public Enemy.

Some people say it is as important as the Fender Stratocaster guitar. Today, you can still find 808 sounds in modern music software. Its deep, booming bass is a language that almost everyone recognizes.
