The Commodore 64, or C64, is a very famous home computer.

It was first shown at a big show in Las Vegas in January 1982. Many people believe it is the best-selling desktop computer ever made. Some estimates say between 12.5 and 17 million units were sold. It was much more popular than other computers like the Apple II. In the United States, it held about 30% to 40% of the market between 1983 and 1986.

This computer worked differently because of its special internal parts. It used custom chips to make better pictures and sounds. One chip was called the VIC-II, which helped with graphics.

Another special chip was the SID, or Sound Interface Device.

The SID chip worked like a music synthesizer. This allowed the C64 to create much better audio than other systems. It could also use multicolor sprites to show moving images on the screen.

A team of engineers worked very hard to build the C64.

Designers like Bob Russell and Bob Yannes were very important. They wanted a low-cost computer to follow the older VIC-20 model. The team even worked through Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends to finish. They used a code name called the VIC-40 during the design stage. Eventually, they decided to call the final product the Commodore 64. This name came from its 64K of RAM, which is the computer's memory.

Commodore had a smart way of making the computer affordable.

They owned a company called MOS Technology that made their own chips. This is called vertical integration. Because they made their own parts, the cost to build each one was low. In 1982, the computer cost about $595. Later, the price dropped even more to make it easier for families to buy. It was sold in many regular stores, not just special computer shops. This helped the C64 reach many middle-class homes.

Today, the C64 is still remembered for many reasons.

About 10,000 different software titles were made for it. These included office tools and many video games. Some people still use the computer as a hobby today. You can even use modern computers to run old C64 programs using emulators. Even 17 years after it stopped being sold, people still recognized the brand. In 2011, research showed that 87% of people still knew the name. It was like the Ford Model T for the computer age.
