A company called NEC made these machines from 1982 until 2003. These computers were very important for the Japanese market. They were used for business, school, and even hobbies.

By 1999, NEC had sold more than 18 million of these units. This helped NEC become a leader in the computer world. Many people used them for many years.

These computers worked in a special way to handle Japanese writing. Writing in Japanese uses kanji, which includes thousands of different characters.

Most global computers could not show these characters easily at the time. The PC-98 had special parts to make this task simple. It used display controllers to manage both text and video graphics.

This allowed the machine to show complex characters clearly. Because of this, the PC-98 became much more useful in Japan.

Developing the PC-98 was a big project for the NEC team.

A man named Hamada led the planning for the new machines. He wanted a computer that could work with older NEC models. The team even had to write their own version of a language called BASIC. They worked hard to make sure the new system was reliable. They also gave free prototypes to other companies to help.

This helped more people create software for the new computers.

Many different models were released over the years with new features.

The first model was the PC-9801, which launched in October 1982. It cost about 298,000 yen when it first came out. Later, the PC-9801F was released in 1983 with a faster brain. The PC-9801VM arrived in July 1985 and became a huge success. It used an NEC V30 processor to run at 10 MHz.

For a long time, the PC-98 was different from IBM computers. This meant it could not run the same programs as other brands. As Windows became more popular, developers stopped making special software for it. Cheaper computers from other countries also began to enter the market. By 1997, NEC stopped making machines that worked with the old system. The world of computers moved toward one standard instead of many.
