This shows how much people value this way to play.

Playing these games has changed a lot over time. Early games were often text-based adventures. This meant players typed commands on a keyboard to move through a story.

Later, games began to use graphics to show pictures. To see 3D graphics, a computer needs a special part called a graphics processing unit. This part helps the computer draw the images on the screen. Many modern PC games are now sold through digital distribution on the internet. This makes it very easy for players to find and download new games.

Computer gaming actually started long before home computers were common. In 1950, Josef Kates built a machine called Bertie the Brain. It was over four meters tall and played games at an exhibition.

In 1961, students at MIT created a game called Spacewar! on a large mainframe computer. This game had two players controlling spaceships around a star. Other early games included OXO, which was a version of tic-tac-toe from 1952. These early machines were much larger than the computers we use today. They paved the way for the games we enjoy now.

In the 1980s, the way people played games changed quickly. Many companies made games that were clones of popular arcade hits.

For example, the Atari 8-bit computers had games like Frogger and Centipede. There was even a game called Paku Paku that was a clone of Pac-Man. During this time, some games were even sold on cassette tapes. A game called Microchess sold over 50,000 copies this way. As computers became cheaper, more families bought them for their homes. This helped the home computer market grow very fast.

Today, the PC remains a very important way to play games. About 66% of developers are currently making games for the PC platform.
