You can play many games on a personal computer. These are called PC games.

A PC game is a video game played on a personal computer.
Playing these games has changed a lot over time. Early games were often text-based adventures. This meant players typed commands on a keyboard to move through a story.
Computer gaming actually started long before home computers were common. In 1950, Josef Kates built a machine called Bertie the Brain. It was over four meters tall and played games at an exhibition.
In the 1980s, the way people played games changed quickly. Many companies made games that were clones of popular arcade hits.
Today, the PC remains a very important way to play games. About 66% of developers are currently making games for the PC platform.
A personal computer game, or PC game, is a video game played on a personal computer.
To understand how these games work, one must look at the relationship between software and hardware. Modern games often utilize 3D graphics, which require a specific component called a graphics processing unit, or GPU. The GPU is a specialized piece of hardware that handles the complex math needed to render images. In the 2000s, Microsoft Windows became the most popular operating system for these games by using a technology called Direct3D. This software allows the computer to communicate effectively with the hardware to display movement and light. Because of the high demands of PC games, the industry has been a major driver for the development of powerful graphics cards.
Computer gaming did not start with the small machines we use today. Before personal computers, games were played on massive mainframe and minicomputer systems. In 1950, Josef Kates built Bertie the Brain, a machine over four meters tall. In 1952, a game called OXO, which was an adaptation of tic-tac-toe, debuted on the EDSAC system. A major milestone occurred in 1961 when MIT students developed Spacewar! on a PDP-1 mainframe.
As technology progressed, the way games were distributed and played changed significantly. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, hobbyist groups and gaming magazines shared game code. Readers would type this code into their computers to play. Some early games, like Microchess, were even sold on cassette tapes. During this era, many companies created clones or ports of popular arcade games.

By the mid-1980s, a wave of inexpensive IBM PC clones from various companies helped lower prices. This made computers more accessible for home use. In 1987, PC game sales rose by 19% year over year, which was much faster than the overall market. While the Nintendo Entertainment System became a massive success for consoles, it also impacted the computer market by reducing disk sales. Despite these shifts, the PC remained a vital platform. The rise of digital distribution through online service providers since the mid-2000s has helped the platform enjoy a resurgence in popularity.
