The development of the PC-98 was driven by a desire to bridge the gap between business and consumer needs. A developer named Hamada led the project planning for the series. He wanted a 16-bit machine that offered backward compatibility with the successful PC-8800 series. This meant users could still use their older peripheral devices, such as displays and floppy disk drives.

To ensure a strong software library, the team also developed N88-BASIC(86). Because they could not reach an agreement with Microsoft for a specific version of BASIC, the team wrote this code from scratch. To encourage growth, NEC provided 50 to 100 free prototypes and technical data to third-party software developers.

NEC released several distinct models that catered to different user requirements. The first model, the PC-9801, launched in October 1982 with a 5 MHz 8086 CPU. It featured an 8-color display with a maximum resolution of 640\times400 pixels. In 1983, the PC-9801F arrived, offering an 8086-2 CPU that could run at 5 or 8 MHz. It included a kanji ROM board containing 2,965 characters to assist with Japanese word processing. The PC-9801VM, released in July 1985, became a major milestone for the series. It utilized an NEC V30 processor running at 10 MHz. This model was incredibly popular, with annual sales reaching 210,000 units.

Market dominance was achieved through strategic hardware choices and industry cooperation. By 1991, the PC-98 held more than 60% of the Japanese personal computer market share. The series expanded from business tools into education and various hobbies throughout the 1990s. NEC also supported the ecosystem by allowing software companies to bundle certain versions of MS-DOS without paying a license fee between 1983 and 1987. This helped build a massive library of available programs. By 1987, NEC reported that one million PC-98 units had been shipped, supported by approximately 3,000 different software packages.

Despite this success, the PC-98 eventually faced significant challenges from global technological shifts. For many years, the Japanese market remained isolated because global manufacturers struggled with the language barrier. However, by 1990, improvements in CPUs and graphics changed the landscape. The introduction of the DOS/V operating system allowed IBM clones to display Japanese text using software fonts. This development gave international manufacturers a way to compete directly in Japan. As Windows became the standard operating system, software developers no longer felt the need to write separate code for the unique PC-98 platform.

The decline of the PC-98 was finalized by the rise of the "Wintel" era. An influx of cheaper clone computers from American vendors increased competition. Additionally, the popularity of Windows 95 reduced the demand for older PC-98 legacy applications.

Consequently, NEC abandoned its compatibility with the PC-98 platform in 1997. The company transitioned to producing computers based on the PC System Design Guide to align with the global standard. This marked the end of an era where a proprietary architecture could dominate a major national market.
