A drum machine is an electronic musical instrument. It makes drum beats and patterns. Some machines sound like real drums. Other machines make unique, electronic sounds.

Early machines were very different. In 1932, Léon Theremin made the Rhythmicon. It could play sixteen different rhythms. In 1959, Wurlitzer made the Side Man. It used a spinning disc to make sound. Later, machines became smaller. They used transistors, which are tiny electronic parts. This helped them fit on a desk.

Some machines use sound synthesis. This means they use electricity to make a sound. A bass drum might use a simple wave. A snare drum might use white noise. These sounds have a special character.

Other machines use digital sampling. This means they play back recordings of real drums. The Linn LM-1 was the first to do this in 1980. It was used by stars like Prince. Many modern machines let you program your own beats. This helps people make pop, rock, and dance music. Drum machines have changed music forever.
