A sampler is a cool electronic musical instrument.

It works by recording small pieces of sound. These pieces are called samples. A sample can be a melody or a drum beat. It can even be a dog barking or a typewriter clacking.

Once you have a sample, you can play it back. Many people use a keyboard to control the sounds.

You can spread one sound across many keys. This is called a keymap. If you play a high note, the sampler makes the sound higher. If you play a low note, it makes the sound lower.

Early samplers were very expensive. One model cost $30,000! Later, new samplers became much cheaper. This helped more people make music. In the 1980s, the Akai MPC became very famous in hip hop music.

Some samplers can also play many notes at once. This is called polyphony. It helps musicians play big, full chords. Today, samplers are used to make many different sound effects.
