Rocky is a 1976 American independent sports drama film. It was directed by John G. Avildsen and written by Sylvester Stallone. The movie stars Stallone as Rocky Balboa, a poor small-time club fighter from Philadelphia. Rocky also works as a debt collector for a Mafia loan shark. The story follows his unlikely journey to face the world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. This film is the first part of the famous Rocky franchise. It explores themes of the American Dream and the "rags to riches" journey.

The plot begins when Apollo Creed plans a title bout to mark the United States Bicentennial. His scheduled opponent cannot compete due to an injured hand. With only five weeks left, Creed decides to choose a local contender. He selects Rocky Balboa because of his nickname, "The Italian Stallion." Rocky is an Italian-American journeyman southpaw boxer. He eventually agrees to the fight for a payment of $150,000. This moment changes his life completely.

Rocky's preparation involves several intense and unorthodox training stages. He uses sides of beef as punching bags to build his strength. He also receives help from Mickey Goldmill, a former bantamweight fighter turned trainer. Mickey had previously viewed Rocky as a wasted talent, but he eventually agrees to help. During this time, Rocky also develops a romantic relationship with Adrian Pennino. Adrian is a shy woman who works at a pet store. Her brother, Paulie, is Rocky's best friend and later helps him with the fight.

The championship fight itself is a display of extreme physical endurance. Apollo Creed makes a dramatic entrance dressed as George Washington and Uncle Sam. In the first round, Rocky achieves something rare by knocking Creed down. This forces the champion to take the match more seriously. The fight lasts for the full fifteen rounds. Both men suffer significant injuries during the match. Rocky requires his right eyelid to be cut to restore his vision. Apollo suffers from internal bleeding and a broken rib. Despite these injuries, Rocky's stamina and will keep him fighting until the final bell.

The creation of the film involved a very complicated production process. Sylvester Stallone wrote the entire screenplay in just three and a half days. He was inspired by the 1975 championship match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Stallone famously refused to let the film be made without him as the lead actor. He even rejected a six-figure deal for the film rights to ensure he stayed in the role. United Artists eventually agreed to his terms. The film was shot primarily in Philadelphia, and many locations became landmarks. The Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are a famous example.

Financially, Rocky was a massive success despite its small beginnings. The estimated production budget was under $1.1 million. However, the film earned approximately $225 million worldwide. This made it the highest-grossing film of 1976. The film's success was also driven by $4.2 million spent on advertising. It received ten Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Picture. These numbers show how a low-budget independent film could compete with major studio productions.

Rocky has had a lasting impact on global pop culture. It is ranked by many publications as one of the greatest films ever made. In 2006, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. This selection was based on its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance. The film's theme song and its story of the underdog are iconic. The success of the first film led to several sequels, starting with Rocky II in 1979. The movie remains a primary example of the sports drama genre.
