It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. He co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo. The story is based on Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel. The film follows the Corleone crime family. It focuses on the patriarch, Vito Corleone. It also tracks his youngest son, Michael Corleone. Michael begins as a reluctant outsider. He eventually transforms into a ruthless mafia boss. This transformation is the central theme of the story.

The story begins with the Corleone family's position in the mafia. Vito Corleone is the head of the family. He is also the de facto "godfather" of the Five Families. These families include the Tattaglia, Barzini, Cuneo, and Stracci families. Michael Corleone is a World War II veteran. He initially tries to stay away from the family business. The family business is run by Vito, his eldest son Santino "Sonny" Corleone, and the consigliere, Tom Hagen. A consigliere is a trusted advisor to a crime boss. The plot thickens when Vito refuses to support drug dealing by Virgil "The Turk" Sollozzo. This refusal leads to an attempt on Vito's life.

As the conflict grows, the film shows different stages of Michael's life. After an assassination attempt on his father, Michael becomes involved in violence. He shoots Sollozzo and a police captain to protect his family. This act forces Michael to flee to Sicily. In Sicily, he marries a local woman named Apollonia Vitelli. However, an assassination attempt in Sicily kills Apollonia. Michael eventually returns to the United States to take over the family business. He moves from a soldier to a leader. The film concludes during Michael's nephew's baptism. During this religious ceremony, Michael's men carry out hits on the heads of the other families. This sequence cements his role as the new Don Corleone.

The history of the film's production is full of challenges.

Paramount Pictures originally bought the rights to the novel for $80,000. The studio struggled to find a director. Several famous candidates turned down the position. Francis Ford Coppola eventually signed on. He initially thought the novel was "cheap stuff." However, he later saw it as a family chronicle. He viewed the story as a metaphor for American capitalism. Coppola also fought to set the movie in the 1940s and 1950s. He wanted to show the emergence of corporate America after World War II.

Production was a massive undertaking involving many locations.

Filming took place in New York City and Sicily. While the studio wanted to save money, Coppola insisted on location shooting. This helped create a realistic atmosphere. The film's music was composed mostly by Nino Rota. Carmine Coppola also contributed additional pieces. The film was a massive financial success. It earned between $250 million and $291 million at the box office. In 1972, it was the highest-grossing film of the year. For a time, it was the highest-grossing film ever made.

The film received immense critical acclaim and many awards.
