Rocky is a famous sports drama movie from 1976. It tells a story about a man named Rocky Balboa. Rocky is a poor boxer living in Philadelphia. He works as a collector for a loan shark. One day, he gets a huge chance to fight the world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for him. The movie is about working hard to reach a big goal.

To get ready for the big fight, Rocky must train in special ways. He uses sides of beef as punching bags to practice his strength. He also runs up the famous steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

A former fighter named Mickey Goldmill helps him train. Rocky also starts a romance with a woman named Adrian. During the championship match, Rocky fights for all fifteen rounds. He shows great toughness even when he is hurt.

Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for the movie in only three and a half days. He was inspired by a real boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. Stallone really wanted to play the main character himself. He even turned down a lot of money to make sure he stayed in the lead role. The movie was directed by John G. Avildsen. It was filmed mostly in Philadelphia.

Making the movie was not easy because the budget was small. The production cost was under $1.1 million. Even so, the film became a massive success. It earned about $225 million all over the world. This made it the highest-grossing film of 1976. The movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It also received ten nominations in total.

Rocky has become a huge part of American culture. Many people call it one of the greatest films ever made. In 2006, the Library of Congress chose it for preservation. This means they want to save it because it is culturally important. The movie started a long series of sequels, starting with Rocky II in 1979. The story of the underdog who never gives up is still famous today.
