He was an urban planner who shaped how cities look and work. An urban planner is someone who designs how buildings, roads, and parks fit together. Moses did not win elections to hold his power. Instead, he held many different jobs at the same time. At one point, he held as many as 12 different titles. He worked for over 40 years to change the New York area.

His way of working involved using many different government groups. He created several public authorities to manage his big projects. These groups could collect money from things like bridge tolls. Moses used that money to pay for even more new things to build. This allowed him to work without needing much help from other leaders. He was also very good at writing laws. This helped him navigate the complicated workings of the state government.

Moses grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and moved to New York as a boy.

He studied hard at Yale College and Oxford University. Later, he earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He began his career by trying to fix how the government worked. He worked closely with a leader named Al Smith. Together, they reorganized how the state government was run. This helped Moses rise to very high positions in New York.

He built many things that people still use today.

During the Great Depression, he helped build 11 large swimming pools for the city. These pools used special designs to stay low in cost. He also built many parkways and highways for cars to drive on.

Even though he built much, his work is still debated today.

Some people felt his projects were too focused on cars. Others said his plans were unfair to certain groups of people. A famous book called "The Power Broker" described his ways as very controlling. Some of his building projects also destroyed many old homes where people lived. Because of these things, people still talk about his impact on the world.
