He was a master of modern architecture. Most builders of his time used straight lines and hard angles. Niemeyer thought these shapes were too stiff and inflexible. Instead, he loved free-flowing and sensual curves. He found these beautiful shapes in the natural world. He saw them in mountains, rivers, and ocean waves.

He believed the entire universe was curved. This way of thinking changed how buildings looked forever.

Niemeyer used a special material called reinforced concrete. This material is very strong and can be molded into new shapes. He used it to create buildings that looked like giant sculptures. One of his most famous works is the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi.

He used thin shells of concrete to make the church look light. He also designed buildings with floating ramps and curved roofs. These shapes allowed people to see beautiful views as they moved. His work showed that buildings could be both useful and like art.

Niemeyer grew up in Rio de Janeiro. He was born on December 15, 1907. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts. After he graduated in 1934, he worked as a draftsman. This is a person who makes detailed technical drawings. He worked with a famous architect named Lúcio Costa. Together, they helped design the Ministry of Education and Health building.

Many of Niemeyer's biggest jobs happened in the 1950s and 1960s. The president of Brazil, Juscelino Kubitschek, asked him to design a new city. This city is called Brasília, and it became the capital in 1960.

Niemeyer designed the National Congress and the Cathedral of Brasília. He also worked on the United Nations headquarters in New York. He designed about 600 projects during his long career. In 1988, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is a very prestigious award for great architects.

Niemeyer's ideas reached all over the world. He was even invited to teach at big universities like Yale and Harvard. His work was shown in famous places like the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Even when he faced hard times and had to live in Paris, he kept designing. He eventually returned to Brazil to continue his work. He designed the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in 1996.
